What is Empire Financial Research?

Empire Financial Research is a publishing company that avails financial advice to regular investors. It was established in 2019 by Whitney Tilson.

It is a corporate affiliate of InvestorPlace, another publishing firm that offers advice to retail investors.

Empire Financial Research Review

If you sign up for any service offered by Empire Financial Research, you will receive advice, commentary, and extensive research of the market which will enable you to make better decisions with our investments.

Besides Whitney, Empire Financial Research has other editors who look for investment opportunities in the market and recommend them to their readers through investment newsletters and special reports.

They focus on investments that the mainstream financial media and Wall Street analysts have overlooked. In a sense, they are contrarians because they do not shy away from opportunities that are high-risk but high-reward.

Although they indulge in it, they don’t dwell too much on the buy and hold strategies that are upheld by their mainstream colleagues. Rather than recommend that you buy and hold, they will provide you with growth investment opportunities, short-selling opportunities, and other unconventional strategies.

They analyze the broader market looking for big trends that are relatively unknown. They believe that these trends are some of the most lucrative opportunities an investor can ever get in on.

Whitney has made an impression on Wall Street investors and counts some famous high-net-worth individuals among his regular readers, including Joel Greenblatt, Bill Ackman, Leon Cooperman, and a few other famous investors.

Who are the editors at Empire Financial Research?

Whitney Tilson

Whitney Tilson was the one who established Empire Financial Research. He is also the one who runs it as the CEO.

Whitney has published two books himself: The Art of Value Investing: How the World’s Best Investors Beat the Market and More Mortgage Meltdown: 6 Ways to Profit in These Bad Times.

He has been on Fox Business Network, Bloomberg TV, and CNBC as a commentator and written op-eds for the Financial Times, TheStreet.com, Kiplinger’s, The Motley Fool, and Forbes.

Enrique Abeyta

Enrique Abeyta joined Empire Financial Research in 2019. His newsletter services are Empire Elite Trader and Empire Elite Growth.

In 2017, he helped start Project M Group, a holding company (that is also a digital media company) that was created to acquire and run other digital media companies. For example, it acquired Revolver Magazine.

His most notable achievement as an investor was outperforming the S&P 500 for ten years straight. He also helped his subscribers navigate the 2008 Financial Crisis and the 2000 Dot Com Crash.

He attended the Wharton School of Business where he was among the people who started the Wharton Fellows Fund – an investment fund for students.

After graduation, he worked on Wall Street for 20 years. He also helped start and manage a few hedge funds. One of them, Stadia Capital, saw its assets under management balloon to more than$1.7 billion. Another, 360 Global Capital Hedge grew to more than $260 million.

Steve Culbertson

He joined in 2019 and has been the lead analyst for the Empire Investment Report.

He has been in the financial services industry for at least 15 years. He is a senior analyst at Empire Financial Research.

Before he joined Empire Financial Research, he was a senior analyst at a family office called Montcalm Partners in New York. As part of the research team, his job was to find new investment ideas for the equity investing division.

Before that, he worked at Spencer Capital, a hedge fund in New York.

What services are offered via Empire Financial Research?

Empire Investment Report

Whitney Tilson and Steve Culbertson run the Empire Investment Report. Whitney is the lead editor while Steve is the lead analyst.

The purpose of this service is to find opportunities that can cumulatively allow you to beat the market while managing the risks.

They target small companies (small- to mid-cap) and they send you new opportunities every month. Positions are typically held for 2 – 3 years.

Empire Stock Investor

It is the flagship service of Empire Financial Research. It is run by Whitney, Enrique, and Steve. They bring more than 50 years’ experience.

They find the best growth stocks that can enable you to safely grow your retirement nest egg.

They deal with large, house-hold companies because they offer stability. They go for any large company that shows signs of growth. They occasionally recommend relatively smaller companies as long as they are well established and have good upside potential.

Empire Elite Growth

Enrique Abeyta looks for long-term investment opportunities in small- to mid-cap companies. He employs a buy and hold strategy and focuses on companies with good growth prospects.

He shares his recommendations every month with his subscribers. The model portfolio usually has about 10 to 15 stocks. He updates his list depending on how the individual stocks perform or how the market performs.

Empire Elite Trader

Enrique Abeyta cares about short-term returns with this service. Unlike Empire Elite Growth where he goes after small companies, he targets big ones with great liquidity with this service.

Unsurprisingly, he shares his updates every week. He asks his readers to hold positions for anywhere between a few days and a few months.

The model portfolio usually consists of around 20 stocks. It is updated regularly as new opportunities arise.

Merits of Empire Financial Research

  • They offer a variety of services. They cover an array of industries and the strategies differ to cater to clients with different preferences. For example, there are long-term and short-term strategies.
  • The editors are expert traders and successful money managers with decades of experience under their belts. You leverage their experience when you partake in their services.
  • The editors scour the market for relatively unknown opportunities; niche opportunities that the mainstream media glosses over or ignores.

Demerits of Empire Financial Research

  • A majority of their recommendations are high-risk, high-reward. Therefore, although the rewards can be life-changing, the risks are also greater, which places your investments under threat.

Is Empire Financial Research legit?

I think Empire Financial Research is a legit company.

Although the publishing firm is a newcomer, the people who run it and publish their strategies through it aren’t. Cumulatively, they have decades of experience in the stock market.

If you take the example of Whitney, he is a former hedge fund manager who took up a $1 million loan from his friends and family to start his fund. In a decade, he had grown it into a fund with AUM worth $200 million. He has also been featured on the Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post

Enrique Abeyta, who is also a former hedge fund manager, spent over two decades running multiple hedge funds.

The editors are each quite experienced in their areas of specialization, which is what you’d want from someone who is offering you advice.

My Final Word on Empire Financial Research

If you decide to buy any service offered by Empire Financial Research, you do so with the assurance that you are taking the advice of people who are experienced traders and former money managers. They also have had good track records in the stock market.

For example, Enrique Abeyta’s actively managed funds beat the S&P 500 index (his benchmark) for 10 years straight, and that run included the 2008 Financial Crisis.

Taking advice from someone who has had some actual success is much better than listening to people who base their advice on conjecture having never tasted success themselves.

On top of that, by subscribing to their services, you leverage their resources (i.e. their ability to conduct extensive research and analysis).

Nevertheless, you should never take any recommendations shared in their newsletters as personalized advice. Not only do they not know how your financial situation looks like but they are also not authorized brokers or advisors.
