What Is Warren Buffett’s #1 Private Investment?

Dave Forest, one of the editors at Casey Research, recently published a presentation pitching what he referred to as Warren Buffett’s #1 Private Investment.

The header, which reads “Private investment previously reserved for billionaires leads small group of Americans to extraordinary gains as high as 3,194%...” implies that he has found a private investment that can make you rich.

In this article, I will walk you through the presentation and reveal the private investment he is teasing here.

What is Warren Buffett’s #1 Private Investment?

At the start of the presentation by Dave Forest (hosted by Rachel Bodden), the first impression you get is that Warren Buffett has some hidden private investment that he has been using to make a lot of money.

Warren Buffet's #1 Private Investment

Rachel even talks about an investment he made 18 years ago that directly contradicted what he said in public. She says that he publicly ruled out the investment as a “financial weapon of mass destraction” but then went and poured $700 million into it in a “private back room deal.” All said and done, he earned $12 billion from it.

Further along the pitch, it becomes apparent that Dave and Rachel are not talking about IPOs, Pre-IPOs, options, or cryptocurrencies.

They are talking about investing in Warrants.

Dave mentions that “ordinary investors” didn’t normally have access to them and that they were exclusively used by the rich but due to a loophole in SEC Rule 30.52 that is no longer the case.

If you are unfamiliar with how Warrants work, you should know that they are a type of “contract,” often compared with options. They give the holder the right (but not the obligation) to buy some assets at a later predetermined date at a certain price.

However, they are not similar to options because they are issued by the company and not some exchange like the CBOE. You can trade warrants in an open market although some are issued privately and you have to purchase them from the issuing company.

Although they can be issued by any company in any industry, they are quite popular with junior mining companies because they enable them to raise capital. This happens because raising money is particularly tough for such companies because their business model is fraught with a higher level of risk than most investors are usually willing to stomach.

Warrants will typically earn you higher returns than the corresponding stocks if the value of the stock appreciates. Conversely, you will lose more money on them than you will on the stock if it depreciates.

He joined the editorial team of Casey Research in 2004, where he edits three advisory services: Strategic Trader, Strategic Investor, and International Speculator.

Is Warren Buffett’s #1 Private Investment legit?

I think Warren Buffett’s #1 Private Investment is a legit presentation.

Although the title implies that it is about some secret investment made by Warren Buffett, the discussion quickly morphs into one about investing in warrants. Dave, who’s worked in the natural resources industry and raised more than $80 million by trading warrants, is more than qualified to be talking about them.

Does that mean that his advice is infallible?

No. Irrespective of how experienced he is, he cannot guarantee that you will make money if you follow his recommendations.

However, you can learn a lot from him and be in a position to use his insights to create an investment strategy to trade warrants.

My Final Word on Warren Buffett’s #1 Private Investment

Although the title Warren Buffett’s #1 Private Investment suggests that Dave Forest has unearthed some mysterious private investment that Warren Buffett uses, it is nothing more than an advertisement for his (Dave’s) financial newsletter, Strategic Investor.

By the way, the “private back room deal” made by Mr. Buffett that earned him $12 billion is just a bunch of warrants that he purchased from Bank of America.

As I mentioned, junior mining companies have a predilection for issuing warrants to finance their activities. Since Dave is a geologist by trade, you can infer that most of his recommendations will be warrants issued by mining companies.

There is probably more to his newsletter but it is safe to assume that a sizeable chunk of his recommendations will be related to that.
